-Writing on Waves

This poem was inspired by words from a woman from the food bank.

“We have dreams, but we need to dream realistic,” she says.

She has been a bookkeeper for the food bank for over 8 years. Unlike the volunteers, this is her job. But just the volunteers, she wants to be here.

So many young people have come and go. They have hope, and so many grand desires. The food bank lady wishes them all the best in achieving their goals, so she places a mirror at the door. On the way out, the visitors see reality in their reflection. It is disheartening, and ugly. They are facing reality. None of it aligns with internal values, so no one every comes back to this food bank twice.

They sweep food off the shelves, and leave behind optimistic dreams.

Look at the tips of your fingers, you can’t expect to be any more than that.
